The train/bus/tram system here in Melbourne is called the Met. A single Met ticket allows you to ride all 3-transport type. Here's how the train system is like here in Melbourne.
Melbourne is divided into 3 different zones. Where I'm staying is in Zone 1. Train tickets to these 3 different zones vary i.e. a ticket from Zone 1 to Zone 3 is more expensive than ticket from Zone 1 to Zone 2. There is also a ticket that gives access to all 3 zones.
Then there are the different ticket types, which applies to all 3 zones. There's the 2-hour ticket, which is valid for, as the name suggests, only 2 hours. Anything beyond that, you would have to purchase a new ticket. A daily Met ticket gives you access to the particular zone you bought for the whole day. Meaning with that single ticket, you can ride the train/bus/tram within that zone. The weekly and monthly Met ticket is similar to the daily ticket, only that it is valid for a whole week/month. Finally there's the 2 x 10 Met ticket, which is a cheaper version of the 2hour ticket. With this ticket, you can use it any 10 times till its validity ends.
Now let's talk about what it would cost me to get to school. I'm staying 2 train stops away from campus. There used to be another ticket type called the Rail + 2, i.e. it's valid only within 2 train stops from the place that I bought it. This ticket used to cost me $1.80. But it has now been scraped.
So I now have to turn to the 2 x 10 Met ticket, as my classes are definitely longer than 2 hours each day. The 2 x 10 costs $26. Each trip to school now costs me $2.60.
Are you guys getting my point so far?
In short, it used to cost me $3.60 ($1.80 x 2) everyday to get to and from school. But now it's $5.20 ($2.60 x 2). I have 4 days of school. That's like $20.80 each week. Then there's the weekly trip to Brunswick to get my halal meat. Plus trips to school are more frequent during assignment/exams period.
I hate the Bracks Government.
For increasing the ticket prices. For scraping the Rail + 2 Met ticket. For not giving us tertiary students transport concession. Heck. A secondary student concession is $8 for freak's sake. That’s like $80+ much cheaper than what I have to spend every month on transport alone!
Then again, maybe I should thank them? The increase in transport prices makes me more determined than ever to fast almost everyday just to save Dad's precious money.
*sigh*
